The Sharks, who finished with the fewest goals in the NHL this season and will miss the playoffs for the second time in three seasons, had a more structured and disciplined game under DeBoer after a disorganized season under Todd McLellan, who was fired on Nov. 10, following the team’s 6-3 loss to the Kings in Los Angeles.
“He just didn’t allow us to get out of our mindsets,” Sharks defenseman Marc-Edouard Vlasic said. “It wasn’t a night of fun, but he kept us on our toes all the time.”
Vlasic said the Sharks have benefited from DeBoer’s “relentless effort” and added that “everybody was a little bit more alert.”
“It’s a little bit different,” Vlasic said. “It’s something that the guys are happy about.”
In San Jose’s first two games under DeBoer, the Sharks have outscored their opponents 6-2, including a 3-2 overtime win against the Los Angeles Kings on Thursday night, when two goals were scored in an extra period of play for the first time in four years.
